The Importance of reading to my children

As a child one of the best things I looked forward to at night was my Mom reading a bedtime story to me, this is where my love for reading developed (not that I get much chance now to read anything non-kid friendly).

When I had Danny I inherited a few books from my own childhood from my Mom but also stocked up on books to read to my precious boy, however he was not interested and the idea slowly died.

Now that Danny is older I must say he has been bitten by the reading bug which I LOVE! Event when I’m exhausted after a long day of work, followed by cooking and semi cleaning when I get home its so great spending that time alone with my boys while disappearing into the magical world of books.

Most nights we do bible stories which align nicely with the bible stories that the boys do at school but last night we mixed it up a bit and did a different book instead.

Last night Danny chose our book for the evening, “The Rhyming Rabbit” by Julia Donaldson (Author of “The Gruffalo”) and we had such a fun time reading this book, acting out, making voices per character and all the while Danny sitting with the biggest smile on his face while listening to me (and I even got Josh to sit still for 5min and listen, BIG step for this VERY BUSY 16 monther).

I never knew how important this 10min a night could mean to my boy until last night. This year I’m committed to spending more time with them, doing things they want, they love, reading, painting and having fun with them. I must say, after last night I think I’m off to a great start.

Thank you to precious Dora – Rose and her wonderful parents Estelle and Ruben for blessing Joshy with this fantastically fun book! We all enjoyed it!

It makes me so happy when I hear of parents reading to their children. If there’s one thing that I would suggest to new parents, this would be it.

Reading is so important for little ones! I’ve read to my little girl every day since day one! Check out our recent post about our favourite books!
Talking of inheriting books, the one book I just had to give her was “the teddy bear who couldn’t do anything” check it out it’s lovely x

Yes! My husband and I are BIG bookworms and we would like our children to develop the same passion. I think with all the electronics and tech that they are growing up around can mask how special just reading an old fashion book can be. The library is one of our favorite places to take the kids. I am not sure how old your boys are, but my boys are 4 & 7 and they love the “David goes to School” series by David Shannon, “Scaredy Squirrel” books by Melanie Watt, and the “Pete the Cat” series by James Dean to name a few. Happy Reading and thanks for sharing!

Ah thanks for taking the time to read and comment.

Mine are 1 and 6. I cannot wait to spend time in the library with them. Reading on a tablet or laptop or phone just doesn’t cut it, you’re so right! The look, feel and smell of a good book and the pages just tickles my brain!
